The First Lot

An alert arrives. What size do you actually put on?

Your risk is a dollar amount. Your stop is a distance. The quantity is the only thing that connects them — and it is the number your broker asks for. Leverage is not on this page, because leverage decides only what the broker will allow, not how much of an account is at risk.

It is called the first lot because it is the only one that has to be sized. When a position runs far enough that the trail has already banked the risk, the desk adds to it — every added lot measured against this number. That is Free-Roll, and it starts here.

Step one

How much are you trading?

Step two

Which position?

Real positions the desk published and has since closed — the levels are already public. Or switch to your own.

R is the score after the trade, not the size before it. One R is the amount you decided to risk; a position that returns +3R made three times that. It never tells you the quantity — the quantity is what you set so that the stop equals your 1R in the first place.

Arithmetic only, on numbers you enter yourself. EDGEwise does not place trades, does not set anyone's position size, and this page is not a recommendation to take any position or to risk any particular amount — those are your decisions. Contract specifications, spread and slippage differ between brokers and can change the real value of a point, so confirm the figures against your own account before you trade. Educational information only, not financial advice. Trading carries substantial risk of loss.
